Knolling is a type of photography technique. This technique consists of overhead shots of many objects that are related to each other, organized parallel or perpendicular to each other. Knolling is a fairly new trend in art, getting it start in the 70's and by 1987 was officially an art trend. It started with a custodial worker, Andrew Kromelow at the Frank Genhry's Furniture store. The store was creating work for the Knoll Furniture brand that is known for their very angular furinture. At the end of the work day Kromelow would rearrange the tools mimiking these right angles so that tools were accessible and easy to find. This was later picked up by another worker at the store, Tom Sachs who created art out of this knolling technique, adopted the phrase "Always Be Knolling" and made it a popular technique throughout the art world.
Students were to choose objects from an activity or hobby they enjoy . They then sketched out how they would lay them out using the knolling technique, as if the objects were in front of them. Students used reference photos to look at details of their objects to create graphite on paper 12 x 12 works of art.
Still life is a work of art that features arrangements of inanimate objects as its main subject. These objects are usually set on a table and include objects from nature, foods, or household objects like glassware and textiles. Some of the earlist still life paintings can be dated back to 15 BCE by the Egyptians, Ancient Greeks, and Romans, mostly in tombs or on walls as mosaics. Since then the still life has evolved into what we know today in comtemportary art where artist create hyperrealistic still life art.
After setting up objects like vases, gourds, and animal skulls, students choose one of four still life set ups and angles they can draw from. Each perspective has a damanding aspect so each student is challenged to their fullist potential.
Pop Art is an art movement that came about in the mid to late 1950's. The movement is known for challenging traditional fine art by including imagery from mass mediat and popular culture.
Students Choose one of two famous pop artist. Andy Warhol or Wanye Theibaud to create a pop art acrylic paining from.
There are five compositional strategies, they are; Rotating, Overlapping, Cropping, Focal Point, and Off-centering. Compositional strategies are used in art to create a more dynamic and visually interesting work of art.
Students created a mixed media (using more than one medium to create) work of art that showed sucessful use of all five compositional strategies to create visually dynamic works.
Students explored the effects of light in photography, and how we can shape light to create different effects and mood. Students were allowed to edit photos after the fact as long as the lighting was the main focus.
Students learned the very basics of stop motion animation. They used the app "Stop Motion Studiio" to take photos and stich together a 10 second animation.
Grotesque Vs As Is. This project challenged students to think outside the box and create a colored pencil drawing of an object, and a grotesque version of it. In these side by side comparisons we see an ordinary object become deformed and repulsive.
In this project students brainstormed social issues that effect our community in parkville/baltimore and choose one they felt strongly about. They were then asked to create a meaningful poster about their topic.
